‘Lettie’s River Run’ attracts hundreds to Amherst’s Jensen Center

The first ever "Lettie’s River Run and Fall Fun Festival" attracted hundreds of people to the Lettie W. Jensen Community Center in Amherst on Saturday, Oct. 13.

The event was headlined by a competitive 5K run that awarded prizes to the top three finishers in more than a dozen different age categories for both males and females. The overall winner in the male division was Timothy Olson of Amherst, who broke the 18-minute barrier with a time of 17:57. The first female finisher was 12-year-old Paige Skorseth of Baldwin, Wis., who completed the race with a time of 22:31.

The 120 runners who participated in the race ran a course that began and ended in front of the Jensen Center and crossed the Tomorrow River twice as it wound its way through the scenic Amherst countryside. A non-competitive 5K walk, which followed the same route, attracted another 80 people.

The 5K Run/Walk was just part of the Jensen Center’s first-ever "Fall Fun Festival," which also included food stands, live music, arts and crafts, pumpkin decorating, face-painting, kayak rides on the nearby Mill Pond, children’s games and numerous other activities.

Along with the Jensen Center, other primary sponsors of the event were Ministry Health Care and Saint Michael’s Hospital, Revel Sports, Delta Dental and ThyssenKrupp Waupaca, Inc. All proceeds from the event will benefit activities at the Lettie W. Jensen Community Center in Amherst.

Organizers of the run and festival said they were delighted with the enthusiastic response to the event.

"We’re thrilled," said Dennis Cook, president of the Jensen Center’s Board of Directors. "For a first-time event, the response was overwhelming. It was great to see that many people here. Everyone had a really good time, and the weather was perfect."

Cook said the "Lettie’s River Run and Fall Fun Fest" will "definitely become an annual event at the Jensen Center."

‘Lettie’s Tomorrow River Run’ is set for Oct. 13 in Amherst, WI

Area runners should be sure to circle the date of Saturday, Oct. 13, on their calendars.

That is when the first annual "Lettie’s River Run" will be held in Amherst, WI.

The event is being hosted by the Lettie W. Jensen Community Center in Amherst, and will include both a 5K  run and 5K & Walk. Both will start and end at the Jensen Center and will wind their way thorough the beautiful Amherst-area countryside along the Tomorrow River.

Although the event is just beginning its first year and is still in the initial planning stages, Jensen Center Managing Director Randy Clausen says he hopes the River Run "will become one of the premier running events in Central Wisconsin in future years and become a popular fund-raiser for the Jensen Community Center."

Clausen said the Oct. 13th date was chosen because it should provide nice weather for runners, and it does not conflict with other similar events in the area.

"We are presently developing a web site, www.lettiesriverrun.org for pre registration" said co-organizer, Perry Dau. "With the run date fast approaching, we encourage all runners to sing up soon and you can also call the Jensen Center for more information." The event will include categories for men and women in various age groups, and may include special events for children and families.

The River Run is being coordinated by Jensen Center Board members Linda Chapin and Jake Barnes, who is a runner himself. They are being assisted by former Amherst-area residents Perry and Bonnie Dau, who now operate Revel Sports www.RevelSports.com in Schofield, Wis. With a slogan of "Pick Your Passion and Revel In," the Mail-order Company deals in apparel and other gear for runners, bikers and other endurance athletes. Perry added, "We are pleased to be a part of this new event in Amherst. This area of Central Wisconsin is ideal for a run and I’m sure we’ll draw some fine competitors."
